Julie Katrine Anderson
Bio
Julie studied graphic design at a prestigious design school in Copenhagen and a few years later ended up in a position as associate professor at the same school.
Her teaching focused somewhat around giving the hand (craft) and the machine (computer) the same attention and upon looking at herself in this light, she noticed that she did not 'walk the walk', being enslaved to her computer. So she decided to do a project that would teach her craft skills.
This coincided with an awful break up with an ex-boyfriend (and his famous last words: THANKS FOR ALL YOUR SHIT BITCH!) and Julie decided to deal with her anger via time-consuming meditative craft.
It was definitely not zen at all, but the artworks she created ended up being her first solo exhibition in 2012 entitled Be My Valentine Bitch! which opened at Gallery VESS in Copenhagen on Valentine's Day. The exhibition had much critical acclaim and was a turning point for Julie's career that had, until this point, been focused around digital media.
In 2014 Julie decided it was time to quit her job in academia and focus on her own work full time. Since then she has won numerous awards through HOW- and Print Magazine for both her personal artwork and her design of printed matter such as books, announcements and invitations.
Julie works under the name Lil'Ol'Lady because she often feels like a 70 year old caught in a 30-something's body. There's the fact that she had arthritis at the age of 30 but also that she very much enjoys knitting rude typography while listening to audiobooks.
Session
Take Shit Personally!
The talk is about how Julie uses her personal projects as a form of therapy for the bad shit that sometimes happens in life. Whether it's a bad break-up with an idiot ex-boyfriend or a hellish time at work, these negative experiences are made into intricate typographic pieces with hours and hours of work poured into them.
Threading 32.000 beads, 4 times each to make a gigantic wall piece might be a cumbersome form of therapy, but it's like they say "When life gives you lemons, ask for salt and tequila!"
